In this post I will be talking about Winter Promise - Science.
I've personally used 2 of their science curriculums - Dinosaur Days and Rock Around the Earth. I used each of these for a homeschool co-op class that I taught. The Dinosaur Days Co-op class I taught had 19 - 9 year old boys in the class!!! I thought it was going to be a crazy year, but it turns out this was one of my favorite classes I've ever taught. The Dinosaur Day curriculum held their attention so well. Each week they came to class excited and ready to learn about the next dinosaur family and were thrilled to talk with me about all they had learned during the week too. The curriculum was so strongly rooted in Scripture and I loved the tie ins with several great books from Answers in Genesis. The Rock Around the Earth was another fun curriculum with plenty of activities to hold my co-op classes attention, and again a foundation of curriculum built on the Word of God - which is so important to me. Currently there are 9 different unit study style science curriculums, ranging mostly in the elementary years though there are several for middle school and even one curriculum for high school. This is a curriculum that can be used with many ages and will keep the entire family engaged in the curriculum with many activities, experiments, and so much more for the year! Berean Builders has designed their curriculum to help children become critical thinkers of the world around them.
Dr. Jay Wile is the beloved author of the curriculum. He is best known for his Exploring Creation Series that used to part of Apologia. He's has recently released a new elementary series that looks fantastic with Berean Builders. I've only used his Exploring Creation Series and it has always been a favorite to teach with and for my high school students to learn with as well. Any science curriculum chosen through Berean Builders is sure to be easy to use and well written. These curriculums will also be challenging and will give a superior science education rooted in the Word of God. is broken into 3 terms for the year. Each term is studied by subject. Elementary science doesn’t start till 4th grade. Before 4th grade nature study is encouraged and no formal science taught. My family has used Sabbath Mood Homeschooling for several terms. We’ve done astronomy, chemistry, and weather in grades 7-9 and chemistry and physics for high school and we have loved everything we have done. I feel like what we have learned with Sabbath Mood has been retained and is still talked about. Science became enjoyable (I am not a science person normally but I found myself enjoying these lessons and the books along with my kids) If you are looking for a Charlotte Mason science - this is it!!! And if you are looking for something other than a dry textbook again - this is it!!! To learn more about Sabbath Mood Homeschool Click HERE Apologia Science - let me count the ways I love you! I must confess I really, really do not like science, however Apologia makes doing science so simple and easy. Apologia is your standard text book Christian science curriculum. Apologia is also written so well. I never have felt like the reading was over my children's age level. I've used everything from the elementary through high school - literally Flying Creatures, Swimming Creatures, Land Creatures, Botany, Astronomy, Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology: we've done them all!
A few of my favorite things with Apologia are the student workbooks that go along with the curriculum - it's like a giant check box that at the end of the year you have to show for all the work you have done in science (which again isn't my favorite subject, I need the positive reinforcement LOL) They also have DVD's that you can use to watch all the experiments if you don't want to do them at home. The way my family has used Apologia has been to lump all the elementary kids together and work through one elementary science curriculum. There is no right order with the elementary curriculum so keep it simple and put them all together for learning. When we did Swimming Creatures we bough aquarium passes and visited the aquarium and beach often. When we went through the land animals we purchased zoo season passes and again visited often. Botany meant we visited the wildflower center all the time - you get the idea. Science really isn't that bad when it's broken into subject matter - still not my favorite subject but Apologia makes it so much better!!! In jr. high and high school my kids have done most of the reading themselves and then we step in with the experiments and questions as things don’t make sense. My daughter has also taken and passed several CLEP science tests. We just reviewed the secular views on a few topics so she was aware of what would be on the test and she passed. Apologia is a great science curriculum for the homeschool mom. Easy to use, fun for the family, and has a solid foundation in the Word of God. Click HERE to check out Apologia |
