Analytical Grammar is a very different approach to grammar and one of the best I’ve seen. The concept of Analytical Grammar is simply that nothing changes from year to year within Grammar, it’s the same 12 rules. What does change is the length and complexity of a sentence.
Analytical Grammar recommends not teaching any grammar outside basic capitalization rules, punctuation rules, and the simple basics of what makes a sentence a sentence. The concepts of further grammar are too abstract and in elementary years a child simply can’t grasp it.
They have 2 courses a middle school course and a high school course. Both can be purchased with DVD instruction videos, a teachers guide, and the student workbook.
I've used more grammar programs than I would care to confess and I can tell you this is the first program that has stuck. My children actually retained and remembered what they learned and amazingly I’m seeing it reflected in their writing too! I will ONLY use Analytical Grammar for all the rest of my homeschooling days because I love it that much!

Spelling Wisdom by Simply Charlotte Mason is a great option for a non- traditional spelling program. Spelling Wisdom has compiled great quotes of history, fiction, and famous people all while compiling over 6,000 commonly used words. Rather than your children being given a spelling list where they may spell the word wrong and then have to correct this wrong spelling in their mind, instead children practice spelling by copying these quotes and spelling correctly. At the end of the week you audibly give them the quote and check to make sure they have comprehended the correct spelling and punctuation of the quote. During the week if there are words your child knows they don’t know how to spell they will give these words extra attention.
I love this spelling program and have used it with all my children. I saw a huge growth in spelling while using this program (and as a bonus I also saw a growth in correct punctuation with my children as well). And one other fun bonus is that these quotes have come up repeatedly in other conversations whether it be as we talk about history or a moral it seems at least once a week once of my children are pulling out their Spelling Wisdom book to reread a quote to the family because it pertains to a topic at hand!

Writing and Rhetoric by Classical Academic Press is a building block curriculum with 12 books (6 years) starting in 3rd or 4th grade. I love this writing program because your children will learn to write by reading great works of writing and mimicking what they have read. This takes all the “I don’t know what to write about” away and gives clear direction on how and what to write.
The skills developed through the program are gained easily and truly without your children even realizing they are learning new writing skills. It happens naturally and is an enjoyable program to use. It’s also an easy program for parents to open and use without a ton of prep work ahead of time.

IEW is a all encompassing writing program. They have so many options on writing. The main program for writing is their Teaching Writing Structure and Style. It comes in 3 levels A (3rd -5th) B (6th - 8th) and C (9th - 12th). It comes with DVD’s that teach each lesson for you (insert happy dance here!).
I am a huge IEW fan and I have used it with all my children in their middle school years. However, the IEW writing style is very formulated (meaning if you gave me a stack of 8th grade papers I could pick out the IEW writers). That being said once your kids have a solid grasp on the IEW writing style move them on to another writing curriculum and watch them soar. The foundation IEW gives is wonderful I just recommend trying a couple other writing curriculums in high school years!
IEW also has a great grammar program called Fix it Grammar. Your children actually learn the grammar by finding and correcting what is wrong with the grammar in each lesson. It’s a different approach to grammar but one that a couple of my children enjoyed.
